Red Wings Mid Season Review

The Red Wings are off for a bit for the All-Star break, and today we are going to be reviewing the first half of their season and what they can do to be better in the second half. To stay updated, make sure you follow my Twitter here and like my Facebook page here.

The Red Wings enter the day with a record of 19-21-8, and they are 13th out of 16 teams in the Eastern Conference. Dylan Larkin has the most points on the team with 38 and has 30 assists, also a team high. Anthony Mantha leads the team with 16 goals.

I want Detroit sports teams to win just like any fan wants to see their favorite team win, but the Red Wings need to rebuild this year and it appears that is what they are doing. The Red Wings need more stars on their team to go with Larkin, and they can either wait and try to attract someone in free agency, or they can trade away picks, players, or a combo of both to try and get a star. Personally, I think draft picks are essentially useless in the NHL unless you have a top 3 pick, so if the Red Wings can trade their pick over the summer when the draft order is announced, they might be able to get a star. But if they see a player they think is too good to pass up on entering the draft, they can pick him.

I also believe that the Red Wings should not fire Jeff Blashill until he is coaching a team that has good players. You cannot judge a coach if he is given a bad team, and that is what Jeff Blashill has. If the Red Wings assemble a good lineup next year, however, and Blashill still cannot get them to win, then he can be fired.

In short, don’t get too angry at the way the Wings are performing this year because it could all just be a plan for the future by Ken Holland.
